Abstract:  The History of the Franciscans in Transylvania. The main goal of the religious order founded by St. Francis of Assisi was to live according to the principles stated in the Gospel, stressedly the one referring to poverty. This principle was a highly controversial issue even while St. Francis alive, but after his death the way Franciscans understood the rule of poverty divided them, and caused the split of the Franciscans. Some observed the rule of poverty strictly, they formed the Order of Friars Minor, OFM, others considered the community may have some possessions, they formed the Conventuals, the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, OFMConv. Both these two came also to Transylvania, participated along its history in pastoral care for the local Catholics. At a certain moment, after the Reformation, the Franciscans fathers were the only Catholic priests allowed to be present in Transylvania. The paper follows the history of the Franciscans in Transylvania also during Communism, and reflects to the aspects of reconstructing the ecclesiastical structures after the fall of Communism.
